What is vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a condition in which the human body inhibits the pigment producing process of the skin’s pigment cells. This process causes the formation of white patches on the skin on all areas of the body. Surprisingly, the same patches can appear on the tissues inside the mouth and nose as well as in the inner layer of the eyeball. Hair can turn white as well.

Pigment can also be lost in the skin after a variety of surgical procedures and traumatic accidents. Examples include the white scars after facelifts and aggressive facial laser procedures such as carbon dioxide laser resurfacing. A variety of burns and other traumatic accidents may also lead to hypopigmented scars.

How can I treat vitiligo or white scars?

A series of laser treatments with the Ra Medical Systems Pharos Excimer Laser can often lead to dramatic re-pigmentation of the skin. Our facility has researched the role of these treatments in the treatment for chronic stretch marks that have lost their pigment. Treatments are undertaken in a series of laser sessions. Improvement is the general rule when treating this type of condition.

How does the laser work?

This technology represents one of the great advances in laser dermatology. The Ra Medical Systems Pharos Excimer Laser we use emits narrow band Ultraviolet B (UV-B) light and has been shown to promote re-pigmentation in those who have lost pigment in their skin. They have also been shown to improve chronic stable plaque psoriasis, and aged white stretch marks.

Benefits of laser vitiligo treatment include:

  • Treatments are painless
  • Requires no medications
  • Virtually no side effects

Things to know about laser vitiligo treatment:

  • Occasional touch-up booster sessions may be required
  • Most insurance providers will not cover the cost of treatment

A message from Dr. David Goldberg and the team at Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists of NY & NJ:

Dear Patients,

Our providers and staff recognize that we are all faced with difficult times as this pandemic continues to unfold throughout our area. However, the continuation of your care remains our top priority!

At this time, our New York City office is temporarily closed.

In our effort to provide you with the highest level of service, the Hackensack and Hillsborough NJ offices will remain open until further notice with limited hours of availability. We ask for your understanding with our protocols on hand washing and social distancing when you arrive for your appointment. Please do not come to the office if you are experiencing a cough, fever, shortness of breath, or other symptoms associated with COVID-19.

Should you prefer not to visit the office in person, our providers are now offering virtual office visits. This is commonly known as telemedicine, or in this case, teledermatology. Our dedicated concierge team will assist you in scheduling a virtual appointment with your provider, including those in the New York City office.

Currently, the government mandates that the only way to have these virtual visits is to communicate via FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, or WhatsApp video. This is because your medical providers needs to see you, and you can show the provider the problem area of your body that you are concerned about. You will also be able to discuss any other issues regarding your ongoing care or for any new skin concerns you may have. Your provider may tell you that an in-person visit may be required for testing or more in-depth examination. In that case, a concierge team member will reach out to schedule an in-office visit.

To schedule your in-person or virtual appointment, please call our office at 908-359-8980 or email [email protected] Our concierge team members will schedule a time for your medical provider to call you back. We have set aside times for all of our medical providers to call you for your virtual appointment.

Please be aware that virtual visits must be billed to your medical health insurance just as they would for an in-person office visit. If your insurance has recently changed, please have that information ready to provide to our team members. Depending on your insurance plan, you may have financial obligations such as co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurance just as you would for an in-office visit (at the present time, the government has only waived co-pays related to COVID-19 testing).

We understand that this is a stressful time, but we are here for you!

Stay safe and healthy,

Dr. David Goldberg and the team at Skin Laser & Surgery Specialists of NY & NJ
